FAQs and other information:

Q: Do LEDs contain mercury?

A: No. Read more about mercury in other types of lights here.

Q: Are your LED light bulbs UL certified?

A: Yes. Our lights are of the highest quality and are either already UL certified or awaiting certification.

Q: Can I use LEDs with dimmer switches?

A: Our bulbs are not designed to work with dimmer switches. Please do not do so.

Q: Is it true that LEDs are good for outdoor use?

A: Yes! Not only do they save money on electricity, they also don’t attract as many bugs. This is because LED lights don't produce as much heat, and also because most bugs are attracted to specific wavelengths of light; LEDs only emit light at specific wavelengths, so less bugs are attracted to LED light than to full spectrum lights.

Q: Is it true that LEDs are hard to break?

A: Yes! LEDs are “solid state” lights, which are shock and vibration resistant, and the bulbs are made of shatter-resistant plastic too. We once dropped one from 5 feet onto concrete, and it worked fine afterwards. While we don't recommend you try that, it does show how much tougher LED lights are.

Q: Do LEDs turn on faster than fluorescent lights?

A: Yes! LEDs turn on instantly, which is why they’re so widely used for brake-lights, instruments, and even traffic lights.

Q: I heard that some kinds of light can damage valuable paintings. What about LEDs?

A: LEDs don’t damage paintings because they produce less heat, and they also produce less UV radiation.

Q: What color of light do they produce?

A: LEDs can be designed to release light of any color and can do so without using colored filters. Our light bulbs are designed to produce the same color as typical "cool" daylight (a light temperature of 5500-6500K; to learn more about light temperatures, please click here).

Q: Why are LEDs better for task lighting than other lights?

A: LEDs generally produce a directed beam of light which is perfect for lighting up a specific area. While our bulbs have been designed to produce a wider area of light, they are still best used for task lighting.

Q: Can I place LED light bulbs in enclosed lighting alcoves?
A: It depends. Although most LED light bulbs produce very little waste heat, higher power versions like the Luxetera produce enough that they should not be placed in enclosed lighting alcoves.

Q: How can you afford to sell LEDs for so much less than the competition?
A: We cut out the middlemen and sell directly to you... buy with us and everyone wins! Also, the savings we get by not having a storefront (and not paying rent) allows us to pass more savings along to you.
